Greetings dear readers!

I write this newsletter at a sort of in-between time in which I’ve much in the works- therefore, I will keep this letter brief.

To begin, I continue to write a new book, In Vain the Ocean: A Kaiju Fairytale, and feature in the post-scripts below some new illustrations.

I have also placed much time and care into the building of new puppets. Some are new takes on characters I’ve made puppets of before, others the first a character will appear off-page! As I introduced in the October 2025 letter, puppetry is a major way I debut new characters. I leap at the chance to make multiple puppets of the same character of different designs and materials. This enables me to present in a variety of settings and in a variety of forms- generally as a large, colorful stuffed animal or paper puppet indoors or a more compact rugged wooden puppet in a forest.

An unfinished wood-carven puppet of Everett, an Estemmenosuchus. Estemmenosuchus is a dinocephalian therapsid (a group of reptiles closely related to mammals) from the Permian period in what is now Russia. I used alder and maple wood scavenged from suburban and countryside areas.

As I continue to build more puppets of more characters, expect there to be video stories and performances- here on the august primeval home site, on Patreon, and on the august primeval YouTube channel!

What’s more, I plan to perform live as well- I already have at SMYRC PDX in December and am preparing busking shows as well as reaching out to other organizations.

Speaking of live presentations, I’ve been invited to the Beaverton Local Author Fair at the Beaverton City Library on May 16th from 11AM-2PM, where I’ll be selling copies of my first book Tokens & Spheres Vol. 1 and will surely appear in some puppet form or other!

Once again, watch for upcoming readings and puppet videos and films on my Patreon, website, and YouTube! In the meantime, check out the photo and video post-scripts below.

After months of building, I look to hosting you in any and all of these spaces

With great anticipation,

In Vain the Ocean: a Kaiju Fairytale

...is one book I have in the works! Kaiju Sea Blat and Kildacroc and inter dimensional Cthulhu-being Madame deVonian must survive and defeat a deadly warship. I've recently added Procreate to my suite of tools and media, and have been quite enjoying the results. Sample pages below!

Image Description: Kildacroc (right) lunges gracefully through the water and gulps down a shoal of fish, expanding her throat pouch like a pelican or humpback whale and filtering them from seawater with her bristle-lined bill. Using sensory pits on her snout, Sea Blat (left) finds worms, crustaceans, and fish in the seafloor through the electricity of their moving bodies. With bristles on her tongue and the edges of her platypus-like bill, she filters swarms of them from the sand and mud.

Image Description: Interdimensional Cthulhu-being Madame deVonian rises over the sea, towering over the damaged naval destroyer USS Heorot. A wormhole opens onto swirling galaxies and solar flares as she raises and expands her tentacles. Stars, planets, and asteroids wheel and orbit, unmoored in space and time.

When finished, In Vain the Ocean will publish for print-on-demand on Lulu.com, where you can order more neurodiverse natural history and queer science fantasy in the meantime!

Puppets, Plays, and Performances!

As I mentioned, I've new puppets in the works. Not only that, I've added songs to some performances and include some brief samples- listen below!

Video description: A polymer clay puppet of Everett, an Estemmenosuchus, accompanies himself in song with an eight-key kalimba. Estemmenosuchus is a dinocephalian therapsid (a group of reptiles closely related to mammals) from the Permian period in what is now Russia. The animal has two short, branching horns on its forehead and two short, blunt horns protruding from its cheekbones. It has a barrel-shaped body; stocky, sprawling limbs ending in five-clawed paws; and a short, tapered tail.

Video description: A wooden puppet of the author character’s dragon form, a scarred spinosaur-like dragon with a whale's tail, accompanies himself in song with a 17-key kalimba.

The entity may also present as their human form August Tian. Signs of their presence include recycling bins raided of crafting materials, which the entity is known to reassemble into prehistoric and fantastical life-forms.

Authorities urge caution around gatherings of flora and avifauna ("plants" and "birds"), which the entity appears drawn to.
